Shaun Parker & Company is committed to promoting arts appreciation and youth education through dance. The Company presents performances and conducts workshops for thousands of students across Sydney and in regional NSW each year.
In 2012 the Company was awarded an Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Commitment in Youth and Community Dance for a collaboration with 33 new migrant teenagers from Western Sydney through CAPTIVATE to develop The Yard. The full-length production of The Yard was nominated for a 2013 Helpmann Award for Best Presentation for Children and produced as a ten-minute documentary on Foxtel’s Artbreak.
Shaun Parker & Company’s professional production of The Yard, which includes a workshop and anti-bullying program, has subsequently visited schools across Australia, with members of the original cast bringing their stories of resilience and finding pathways through dance to a new generation of young people. Some of the original cast members have gone on to feature in other Shaun Parker & Company works.
“My kids were so engrossed. They couldn’t stop talking about it and for a group of such disengaged students that’s incredible. They best bit was, they could have been my kids on stage, such a diverse group. My students really connected to them.”
